WESTERN STATES & AMA ALLIANCE 2nd REGIONAL CONFERENCE

All Alliance members were welcomed to participate. The 2013 Western States Regional Conference was hosted by the California Alliance in Newport Beach, CA. January 31 – February 2, 2013.

CMAA FALL RETREAT

The CMAA invited members to a restorative retreat in beautiful Lake Tahoe. We were lucky to have Michael Ward facilitate our plans for the upcoming year.

When: September 27th – September 29th 2012 (Thursday 1:30pm until Saturday breakfast)

Where: North Shore Lake Tahoe, California

Why: It was an unforgettable opportunity. We enjoyed the company of Alliance friends and were able re-energize with our County Alliance members

Thanks to four of our CMAA Members who graciously opened up their homes for the memorable weekend in the mountains.

ANNUAL SESSION MEETING and strategic planner Michael Ward

DATE: Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, 2012
PLACE: Embassy Suites, Sacramento

The CMAA WINTER CONFERENCE was held on Friday and Saturday, February 3-4, 2012. The Marriott Newport Beach Hotel was the perfect setting with beautiful weather and across the street from the Fashion Island Mall. There was a Board of Director’s meeting on Thursday afternoon to discuss business and bylaws followed by a reception and light dinner funded by the Foundation.

The actual meeting started on Friday with a county Alliance panel giving descriptions of their type nonprofit status. Douglas Mancino, JD, Hunton & Williams, LLP then gave a great presentation on 501c3s. He was very knowledgeable and informative to our group.

For our Health Symposium, Ruth McCarty gave us background and how Acupuncture can be blended with organized medicine.

Lunch was delicious and delightful with speaker and author Sharon Rivkin regarding “Breaking the Argument Cycle”.The afternoon focused on our upcoming changes in our Alliance. The afternoon was finished off with CMA President James Hays, MD speaking to us.

CMAA FALL RETREAT Sept. 16-17. Our first meeting was held at a beautiful lakefront setting on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.
Presenter Michael Ward was instrumental to the success of our Retreat. He gave us new insight about our Alliance and what we need to do to move forward. Our Alliance will be stronger by becoming a “new Alliance”.

THE #1 KILLER OF TEENS ARE TEEN DRIVERS!

JourneySafe is an outreach program established by Dr. David & Donna Sabet, parents of Jill Sabet. Jill and her boyfriend, Jonathan Schulte (photo) were two remarkable teens who lost their lives May 26, 2005 in a senseless single vehicle automobile crash. They were passengers in a friend’s overcrowded car on the way to their junior prom. It was no freak accident and no drugs or alcohol were involved: just an instant of distraction in which the young driver looked away from the road searching for a pack of gum, then panicked and lost control of the car.

After Jill’s tragic death, the Sabet’s recognized the major contribution that distraction causes in the deaths of over 6,000 teens annually. They created the JourneySafe program, an educational outreach of the “Gillian Sabet Memorial Foundation” that utilizes the “Remember the 5 Tips” to survive. The primary goal of the JourneySafe program is to educate teens and parents about the unique risks faced by young drivers and their passengers. Using the story of Jill and Jonathan and focusing on the teens that are killed each year in similar automobile crashes, JourneySafe promotes and teaches a “positive peer pressure — friends protecting friends” concept that teens can use as a tool to protect themselves and each other on and off the road.

On October 6, 2010, the Fresno-Madera Medical Society Alliance, in conjunction with their medical society, held the CMAA sponsored Regional Conference, “Making Order Out of Medical Practice Chaos”. There were forty-seven attendees; many were CMAA members. Attendance was also open to Office Managers who worked in offices where the physician was a CMA member.

Frank Navarro, CMA Associate Director of Economics Services, spoke to the issues of payor abuse and encouraged members to contact his department directly for assistance with particularly difficult reimbursement issues; Marsh Lose, Risk Management specialist with NORCAL, addressed “Hot Topics in Risk Management. Paul Hegyi, CMA Government Relations shared the status of health care reform legislation at the state level. On a different theme, Aamer Hayat, of Avecinia Wellness Center demonstrated how the center used social media, primarily Facebook, to stay in touch with their patients. The last speaker, Ken Ellzey, MD, of Kaiser Permanente Wellness Department, discussed the “Six Pathways to Wellness”. The evaluations indicated that each of the speakers was well received and every attendee left feeling that she/he had gained some extremely valuable information, both in their role as office manager as well as personally.

The CMAA Fall Board Meeting

was on Saturday, October 2, 2010. The meeting began in the morning followed by lunch with speaker Elizabeth Mc Neil who told us all about the latest on national health care issues. Following lunch we attended the opening of the CMA House of Delegates where the Alliance presented photos showing our impact on the community and how we support the family of medicine.

Plans are underway to reactivate this county Alliance.

On July 27th, the Monterey County had a planning luncheon that was very successful. The CMA Board of Trustees will be notified to recharter the Alliance. There are a couple of leaders already in place. Patricia O’Keefe will take the lead and a past president from Fresno/Madera, Sharon De St. Jeor, will take a leadership role. Sharon has a home in Carmel and is a half-time resident. Sharon Jensen from the Monterey County Medical Society will be the secretary/treasurer. So it’s a go!
